How to Eat a Cupcake- Part book review, part cupcake review, part film quote

If you’re a regular reader of this blog or you just happen to know me, then you’ll know I use the word love liberally.

Maybe it’s because ‘Kimmy says if you love someone you say it, you say it right then, out loud. Otherwise the moment just…’ *Cue boat passing under bridge and fallen shadows across faces as Michael and Julianne gaze into each others eyes* ‘Passes you by…’ Julia Roberts (Julianne), finishes his sentence breathlessly. ‘Passes you by’ He re-iterates, you know incase you missed the symbolism.

I digress. But another one of my many loves is My Best Friends Wedding and one should never pass up an opportunity to quote one of their favourite films.

Back to the subject of liberal love.

Two things I love a great deal in this world are friends and red velvet cupcakes… and I’m not sure they always rank in that order.

Last week my loves combined and I was simply blown away, one taste bud at a time.

Have you ever had one of those weeks that are so good and simultaneously so bad, you’re emotionally stunted by the cosmic ambivalence? That was last week.

At those times what is better than a friend who bakes you cupcakes?

The answer is, when your husband, Ryan Gosling, bakes you cupcakes.

Anyhow, the whole occurrence was particularly symbolic because I’d just finished reading Meg Donohue’s How to Eat a Cupcake. It’s a charming tale of friendship and closure.

Under ordinary circumstances I steer clear of books about tainted friendships, mostly because I like to think that if any relationship can be sustained, it’s friendship and nobody is going to ruin that for me.

This however, proved to be a very sweet (no pun intended) story about an unlikely duo that comes undone beneath the pressures of adolescence. Only to be reunited when their paths cross unexpectedly as mature adults.

Violins anyone?

I didn’t say it wasn’t cliché. But we must remember clichés survive for good reason.

And obviously somewhere in there, there’s mention of cupcakes. Lots of cupcakes.

In the same week, I also finished a first draft of my thesis. I know, hallelujah… Mehallelujah if you will.

In most instances the only people who’ll consider this an accomplishment, are those who have undertaken, are currently undertaking or know someone who has or is undertaking any kind of dissertation writing.

That was obviously the good part of my week.

The bad part, we don’t talk about.

But to celebrate, my uber lovely friend, Anisa, made me a dozen red velvet cupcakes because she is one of the most amazing human beings on the planet.

So amazing in fact, that you can be sure I’m going to coerce her into an interview for a Randomly Fabulous post.

There is not a person on this planet that knows Anisa, who doesn’t love her. That’s not even an exaggeration. It’s physically impossible not to love her.

Maybe her cupcakes are so awesome because she pours a whole lot of love into the batter *wink wink*.

So in the meantime if you’re looking for cupcakes for a special occasion or you just wish to indulge in some home baked, comforting goodness and you like what you see below (and there’s really no reason why you shouldn’t) then feel free to contact me and I can put you in touch with the cupcake guru herself.

Thinking about the red velvet right now makes me salivate. I know there’s nothing attractive about that but dear Lord, it’s the truth.

The cream cheese icing is perfectly fluffy and smooth and the cupcakes are moist and the whole thing quite literally melts in your mouth and one really is not enough. No you must devour, bite by precious bite, at least two cupcakes to feel satisfied.

When I say devour I honestly mean it. There is nothing remotely civilized about the way I down those cupcakes. Think of a pie-eating contest but I occasionally pause with a mouth full of icing and cake to tell anyone who’ll listen how AMAZING this cupcake is. A bit like the guy below

And it really, really is amazing.
